Historical Roots of Islamic Jihad in Arakan: 1954 Mujahid Ambitions Resurface
In 1954, Cassim, leader of the Mujahid rebels in Arakan,
declared plans to establish an "Islamic Empire" in western Burma,
reflecting early jihadist ambitions in the region. His forces had long
terrorized local communities, and he released a Buddhist monk to send a message
to Prime Minister U Nu’s government. Today, groups like ARSA and RSO echo
similar goals, renewing long-standing Islamist campaigns in Arakan.
