  A notorious Muslim extremist group, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), was well-known for its terrorist activities against the local civilian population, especially non-Muslim people in northern townships of Arakan such as Buthiduang and Maungdaw. The activities of the ARSA were recorded in 2016 and it came to be noticed in a large degree when August-2017 violence operation by the Myanmar military that drove out several thousand Muslim residents in northern Arakan into Bangladesh took place.   While the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA) has made significant strides in liberating much of Arakan (Rakhine) and southern Chin states from the Myanmar military, it now faces an increasing threat from Rohingya militant factions operating in northern Arakan.  The ULA/AA has primarily focused its efforts on fighting the military, not generally engaging offensively with them.   The year 2025 began with an incendiary  statement  from Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) leader, Ataullah. In a New Year’s Day message, he urged his followers to “finish off” the Arakan Army (AA), referring to them as “Mogh Baghi” and accusing them of deceitfully claiming Arakan as their land. His language leaves little room for ambiguity   “Those Mogh Baghi falsely claim Arakan as their land through lies and deceit.
