Untold and Unheard: The Rise of ARSA and RSO Terrorism in Maungdaw, northern Arakan

A notorious Muslim extremist group, the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), was well-known for its terrorist activities against the local civilian population, especially non-Muslim people in northern townships of Arakan such as Buthiduang and Maungdaw. The activities of the ARSA were recorded in 2016 and it came to be noticed in a large degree when August-2017 violence operation by the Myanmar military that drove out several thousand Muslim residents in northern Arakan into Bangladesh took place. The ARSA, very often, claimed to represent the interests and suffering of the Muslim community but it is the concerned Muslim community that is suffering due to its aggressive actions. Due to its religious extremism, the ARSA’s terrorist actions against the non-Muslim groups were culminated when 99 Bengali Hindus villagers  from Kha-Maung-Seik village of northern Maungdaw were massacred in August 2017. The Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO), founded in 1980s and re-emerged af...

Rohingya militants threaten peace in northern Arakan State

While the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA) has made significant strides in liberating much of Arakan (Rakhine) and southern Chin states from the Myanmar military, it now faces an increasing threat from Rohingya militant factions operating in northern Arakan.  The ULA/AA has primarily focused its efforts on fighting the military, not generally engaging offensively with them. These militant factions – the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO), and Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA) – have allied themselves with the military against the ULA/AA, particularly in the areas of Maungdaw and Buthidaung townships, which have come under the increasing control of the ULA/AA. https://english.dvb.no/rohingya-militants-threaten-peace-in-northern-arakan-state/

Myanmar: New evidence reveals Rohingya armed group massacred scores in Rakhine State

[The men] held knives and long iron rods. They tied our hands behind our backs and blindfolded us. I asked what they were doing. One of them replied, ‘You and Rakhine are the same, you have a different religion, you can’t live here. He spoke the [Rohingya] language. They asked what belongings we had, then they beat us. Eventually I gave them my gold and money. Rohingya Armed Groups and the Struggle for Arakan

The year 2025 began with an incendiary  statement  from Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) leader, Ataullah. In a New Year’s Day message, he urged his followers to “finish off” the Arakan Army (AA), referring to them as “Mogh Baghi” and accusing them of deceitfully claiming Arakan as their land. His language leaves little room for ambiguity   “Those Mogh Baghi falsely claim Arakan as their land through lies and deceit. I trust you will continue to face them with even greater determination and carry out more aggressive confrontations… InshaAllah, you will overcome and finish them in the future.” https://www.rohingyarefugee.news/p/rohingya-armed-groups-and-the-struggle

Dil Mohammed: The smuggler shaping a war in Arakan

Under the guise of unifying different Rohingya factions, Dil Mohammed has been making public appearances in the refugee camps of Bangladesh,   including at a massive rally on 25 December. The gathering was remarkable not just for its size but for its brazenness. Groups long dismissed as criminal elements by the Bangladesh authorities, including the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa) and the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO), were given a public stage. They made no effort to hide their objective: rallying support for war against the Arakan Army (AA). But while these grand declarations are made openly, the actual mechanics of recruitment are kept behind closed doors. In mosques and discreet gatherings, Dil Mohammed and his close associates - the so-called “Four Brothers Alliance,” which comprises Arsa, RSO, the Arakan Rohingya Alliance (ARA), and the Rohingya Islami Mahaz (RIM) - have been laying the groundwork for what amounts to forced recruitment. They demand that e...

How Pakistan’s ISI is helping Rohingya armed groups to forge a united front in Bangladesh

On 25 December, representatives from four outfits—Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO), Islami Mahaz, Arakan National Defence Force (ANDF), and the Arakan Rohingya Army (ARA)—shared the dais at a refugee camp in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar following a new alliance called the Four Brothers’ Alliance or The Rohingya Army among these groups.  An Indian government official was of the opinion that linkages with ISI offered the Rohingya groups better chances of gaining access to a wider network for procuring the ingredients necessary to wage war in Myanmar than what would have been possible with Bangladesh’s spy agency Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).   https://www.firstpost.com/opinion/how-pakistans-isi-is-helping-rohingya-armed-groups-to-forge-a-united-front-in-bangladesh-13856825.html
